Tiles or Symmetric Quilts

Tiles can be seamlessly joined together to cover the plane, as has been done to make the background for this page. They can be created with strange attractors that use trigonometric functions. This means that if the parameters are correctly chosen the pattern generated will repeat periodically in two directions. In fact Spirofractal constrains the function used so that all the points lie in a small area (depending on the type of symmetry required), and then it repeats the pattern to build up a tiled image that fills the screen.

There are seventeen possible types of symmetry for designs using one repeated tile. The next version of Spirofractal has many more possibilities for creating tiles, and can create tiles with any of these symmetries. You can see examples of all the different possibilities in the Wallpaper Gallery.

Typical hexagonal and square tile patterns. It is worth allowing plenty of time for tiled patterns to be generated.

Some of the tiles in the gallery can be viewed in a slide show, which will change background approximately every ten seconds. I also used some of these tiles for card backs for my Alcoholic Concentration game.
